How to find and resolve any balance differences

Recap identifies two balances for each account you connect:

  1. Exchange Balance – the balance reported by the exchange when synced.

  2. Recap Balance – the balance calculated based on the transactions that have been imported.

A Balance Differences error message will appear on an account card if the exchange-reported balances don’t match those calculated by Recap from your transaction history.

In some cases, balance differences may be minor and caused by factors like rounding. However, larger discrepancies can indicate missing transactions or inaccurate data, which could impact your capital gains/loss calculations.

How to check for balance differences

Click the Balances tab within the account card to view and compare the Exchange Balance with the Recap Balance for each asset.

Common Reasons for Balance Discrepancies and How to Fix Them

Exchanges Can Return Incomplete Data

Recap integrates directly with your exchange via a read-only API. However, some exchanges may not make all of your data available through their API or may return incomplete data, such as missing transactions or fees.

For some exchanges, like Binance, you can fill these gaps by importing additional CSV data exported from the exchange. Simply click the cog icon on the account card and follow the instructions to upload the CSV file.

If the exchange doesn’t support this functionality, you can fill the gaps by adding manual transactions from the Activity screen. Download your full transaction history from your exchange and compare it to the data in Recap to identify which transactions need to be added manually.

Unidentified Assets

When your data is imported into Recap, we automatically identify the assets involved in each transaction by using the currency codes provided in the transaction data. At Recap, we’ve curated our own reference data with comprehensive mappings for supported exchanges and pricing providers, ensuring assets are correctly identified and matched to accurate pricing.

However, there are occasions when we’re unable to automatically identify an asset, which can lead to balance discrepancies. You can learn more about unidentified assets and how to resolve this issue by clicking here.

Minor Balance Differences

If your balances show only very small differences, such as a penny in value, you can safely ignore the Balance Difference errors.

To remove these errors from your account card and clear the warning triangles from your Issues tab, simply update your account settings.
