Getting Started: What is Recap? → Signing Up → What is my secret phrase?
Your secret phrase (formerly known as the recovery phrase) is a unique set of words generated when you first create your Recap account. It is the key that encrypts and decrypts all of your data within Recap.
Why is my secret phrase important?
Recap is built on the principle that privacy is security. Unlike other crypto tax tools, Recap uses client-side encryption — meaning your data is encrypted on your device before it ever leaves your browser. Your secret phrase is the only key that can decrypt it.
This means:
Only you can access your data — not even Recap can see it.
Your exchange API keys, transaction history, and tax reports are all encrypted with your secret phrase.
If you share your account with an adviser, the sharing is also encrypted end-to-end.
How should I keep it safe?
When you create your account, Recap will ask you to back up your secret phrase. This is essential.
Write it down and store it somewhere safe — treat it like a very important password.
Do not share it with anyone. Recap will never ask you for your secret phrase.
When will I need it?
You will be asked to enter your secret phrase when:
Logging in from a new device or browser that Recap doesn't recognise.
Your browser's local storage has been cleared (e.g. after clearing cookies or cache).
What happens if I forget it?
Unfortunately, if you forget your secret phrase, there is nothing we can do. Because Recap does not store or back up your secret phrase, we have no way to recover it. You would need to reset your account and start from scratch.
We understand this is not common practice for crypto tax tools, but we believe crypto investors value this level of privacy and security. You can read more about what happens if you forget your secret phrase here.
